Making characters

  • Sep. 12th, 2008 at 11:16 AM

So, tonight one of my groups is getting together to make charactes for the Dresden Files rpg.  I am more than a little excited about this.  Now, we still don't have some of the magical contents, so these will be less magical than they could be.  I will get with them again once we have that informatin, but in the meanwhile, we see how it goes.  There are three of them, and I am going to make a few myself.  So we should hopefully, have a decent amount of characters done by nights end.  Combined with the city creation we have already done, the only thing that will be left to make a few magical types later.

I am rereading the information today to make sure I have a grasp of it.  But it is similar as to how Spirit of the Century is done, with a few twists because of the darker setting.  It should be interesting!

A second group...

  • Aug. 10th, 2008 at 8:30 AM

So, I have city creation  (for the most part) for my own group.  I decided to try another group as well.  I found a few people from this community and even one from www.nerdnyc.com and we got together last night to meet for the first time.  It was a lot of fun and this time I decided to hang back and let them come up with everything on their own.  That is different from my group where I really jumped on it from the beginning and pushed it forward.

It was an interesting discussion with

[info]sinboy, [info]rosefox, and [info]ogreteeth who are all excited and on board with this project.  I cannot wait to get into the city stuff.

My second group...

  • Aug. 7th, 2008 at 4:48 PM

While my first group is going to be doing a run of SOTC this weekend, I have decided to have a second group created a city for the Dresden Files Rpg.

I hope I am not biting off more than I can chew.  :)

With the first group I really took a hold of it and did a lot of research for NYC.  I had ideas for the way the city was going to be even before I met the two people that helped me create it.

This time I am going a different tack.

I am not going to push anything. I want to see what they can come up with and then compare the two cities.  I know one person has possibly seen the write up for it, but that is cool.  So we are going to try to get together Saturday and start thinking about ideas.

I am excited again.  :)

City creation: New York City part 2

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 9:01 AM

This is part 2 of the City creation for NYC.  It has the locations and Npc's for each.  This is about 95% done and will be tweaked a bit over the next few days.

Here is part 1 if you missed it.

City creation: New York City Part 1

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 8:34 AM

This is part 1 of my New York City creation for the Dresden Files RPG.  I apologize now for how long it is, but I do tend to over due things from time to time.  :)  So, I am splitting it up into two parts.

Part 1 will be the themes and the history (that I found interesting) that was changed, or affected by the Dresdenverse.
Part 2 will be the locations and the questions you had to answer for each city. So here is part 1, and I am doing the LJ cut to try to avoid annoying everyone with my long posts!.

City creation was a success.

  • Aug. 2nd, 2008 at 10:34 PM

So, I just got home a little while ago from city creation with my friends Henry and Dawn.  It was made more difficult by the three other people that could not make it today.  Doing it with only two other people is not the way I wanted it go to, but that is ok.  I think it turned out really good.  Besides, I have another group I may be running anyways, so we will see what two different NYC's can look like.

I will post tomorrow the brunt of what we came up with.

Frustration is mounting...

  • Aug. 2nd, 2008 at 10:59 AM

I know I am not the most patient person in the world.

People have been telling me this most of my life.  Fine, I get it.

But I was really wanting to get going on the Dresden Files city creation today, not to mention play Spirit of the Century.  But since I have woken up I have found out that three of the possilble five people that were coming to play SOTC and help with the Dresden Files Rpg, cannot make it.  I know it is summer and I know people have a hard time trying to delegate all the things they are doing this time of the year.  Especially with two of my friends, they are almost always busy and I was surprised they even thought they could make it this weekend.  I get how hard it is.

I get that, really I do.

But it does not take away from the frustration of three only being three people (counting me).  First of all, I do not know if we can even game now.  It is hard to run a two person game and keep it fun and interesting, but I may try.  Also due to how badly I want to get this city creation started and how much I am happy to be part of something so cool.

Now the two remaining people, I am sure are more than willing to help.  So, we will get this started, and probably work on this more later.
But I really wanted as many people as I could get to be involved with this, and that part is annoying me this morning.  Saying that, i was planning on having possibly two different groups, and I still have plenty of time.

So, I should stop being so dramatic.  :)  But I did get a little caught up in the excitment of it all.

I am taking a day off of city creation. :)

  • Aug. 1st, 2008 at 2:28 PM

The last few days have been nuts.

I have doing a lot of thinking about what direction the city creation for NYC should go, but I think I am gonna relax today and not think about it anymore.  Besides, I am running at Spirit of the Century game tomorrow and we could have a total of three new people to learn the game.  :)  That in itself is kind of cool.  Now two of them will be playing it is a test run for th DFRPG (dresden files role playing game).

So I am gonna stop and think about what kind of awful villiany they will have to up against!

:)

After that, we will then talk about the city creation and get that rolling.  I am very excited about both parts.

More thoughts on my city creation...

  • Jul. 31st, 2008 at 3:03 PM

I am meeting my group this weekend, but I thought I may go ahead and create my own city today and tomorrow.  Then still make one with my group and either combine them, or send both of them to Evil Hat.

These are the main themes (aspects) of the city so far.  Subject to change at pretty much any time.  :)  I will be changing this until it feels right, so any thoughts are welcome.

The city that never sleeps. My thoughts on this is that a rogue sorcerer (possibly one of the original members of the Black Council) cast some type of enchantment on the city where people have a hard time sleeping.  Or have a hard time reaching r.e.m.   Records are unclear as to when it happened, but it is rumored to happen just after the end of the Civil War (1865).   The "mundane" are unaware of this.

The sorrow of the Twin Towers. 9/11 is still fresh on those that lived here then. Hard not to put it in here somehow.   I do not want to mess with this much. Mostly it is just a sadness that resonates through the city when people think of that awful day. But again, it is such a part of the city now, it is hard to ignore.

Crowded New York City has 8,274,527 (2007 census), so the city (and the other boroughs) is completely too populated, which makes it so much easier for the supernatural element to work.

Lady Liberty Protects us. When the Statue of Liberty was commissioned and delivered to the United States by France, Vincent Demille (a known member of the White Council) and a higher ranking member of the Summer Court, cast an enchantment over the Statue on October 28, 1886 (the day it was dedicated).   The enchantment does a couple of things. First of all, the Statue of Liberty is a safe haven. It has safe area (works like an extremely powerful boundary) that can keep out most of things that go bump in the night, but could not keep out Mab or someone else of her stature. Secondly, to help attempt to counter the enchantment that makes sleep difficult, the enchantment (I have no idea on this yet).  :)

A few locations, this is early draft and not even close to being done.

The Statue of Liberty (see above lady liberty)
Aspect.  A safe haven from the dark

Nyc subway system.
Aspect.  The darkness below or Haunted number 6
Not sure what I want to do with this yet.  I had one suggestion from [info]rechan  about the stories of the ghost subways.  I had already thought of that, but his seconding it made me feel like it was the right direction.   Not only that, but there are tunnels and such under the city that can be used as well.

Broadway
Aspect.  Under the leash of the White Court
My thought is a lesser house of the White Court managed to gain control of a good portion of Broadway.  It is an attempt to make a powerplay to move up in the ranks of the white court.

Chinatown
No aspect yet
So much to choose from here.  Could be a place for the Red Court or one of many others.  I also need to have some neighborhoods that are "mundane".

Central Park
Aspect.  The werewolves rule the park
This was a no brainer.  Central Park is HUGE.  Not sure whether it will be broken down into different packs or one that rules it for the most part.  Either way, a very dangerous place to go.

Burning alpha, city creation thoughts...

  • Jul. 29th, 2008 at 12:33 AM

After getting the info from drivingblind today the burning alpha playtesters have began brainstorming about how they want to create their own cities for the game.

I am doing this as well.

I live in New York City, which is both a good and bad thing for this type of game.  There are so many neighborhood and cultures in the city (and the surrounding boroughs) that I am very excited about the prospect of seeing what we can created.  On the other side, New York City can be a big daunting and you want to make sure you get the feel of it.  That could be either very easy, or a bit difficult.  The funny thing is of my main group, five of the six of us are transplants from other places (one from Maine, one from Oklahoma, one from Pennsylvania, one from Connecticut, and one from all over).  Only my friend Henry has lived in NYC his entire life, mostly in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

So, I got to thinking about New York City and what it has to offer and here are just a few notes.

1.  It is a city of culture.  You can literally choose from MANY different races and culture.  That is nice when dealing with a supernatural aspect of things.
2.  It is a tough place to live.  The summer's and winter's are harsh (mostly due to the fact that most people do not drive, so they are out in the elements more).  Which also would make you more of a target.  Rent can be very harsh, and I don't imagine the city I am creating in the game would be any different.  Combine that with the supernatural aspect of a Red Court vampire feasting on you and well it can be a handful.
3. I love the idea of doing something with the Statue of Liberty.  Having the ley lines run through it and it being the center.  I also would like to make it almost a place of safety from the creatures of the night.  My thought is when it was commissioned from the French, it was financed by someone that had ties with the White Council and the statue was actually "blessed" in some way.  I am early in this thought.
4.  The twin towers.  I can imagine that would be a place that comes up in the game.  9/11 was horrible and I would never do anything to remind people of that, it would be more of a setting than anything else.  You cannot think of NY without thinking of that horrible day almost 7 years ago.  Having known people that died in the Oklahoma City bombing, I can sympathize with the pain in this.
5. The subway system is another place that can be used almost like the way Butcher uses the tunnels under Chicago.  A lot of things you could do with the NYC subway system.
6.  You have some other cool areas.  Chinatown, Coney Island, Times Square, Yankee Stadium, The West Village, to name just a few off the top of my head.

Those are just a few thoughts as I tried to sleep.
