Gaming excitement

So, for the last few months (and even farther than that) I have been running games.  It started with Spirit of the Century, and then continued with the Dresden Files RPG.  Since I am such a big fan of the fate system, it has been a nice experience for me to run those games.

The only down side is I have only actually gotten to play (not run) anything a handful of times since June.  That is about to change, and I am excited.  First I am going to be playing Trail of Cthulhu with a few people from www.nerdnyc.com That is very exciting considering how much I really enjoy the Cthulhu mythos.  I will have more specfics on my character as it is made.  The only thing I have as of yet, is that he will probably be either a criminal or detective, with a Drive of revenge.

Also. [info]sinboy whom was one of the people involved with my playtesting of the DFRPG, is running a campaign of the game.  It was information I had send him while I was doing my own playtest.  So, I am very excited about this since I actually get to play the game!  I am thrilled since I am such a Dresden fan and want to play the game very badly.  I really want to make a wizard and am going to start thinking how I want to go about it.  It should be a lot of fun.  :)

So that is my gaming update and I also plan on getting the new girl in my book club (Katey) into gaming by way of Spirit of the Century.  That should be fun as well.

Game related stuff...

Just a few notes on rpg related stuff that is going on in my life.

  • Obviously, our game we are making is going through an organizational phase, which is what we needed to really move forward the way want it too.  I am looking forward to getting back to creating.
  • Am waiting for the info for the Dresden Files RPG.  Damn, I am excited, and so are the people that will be helping me.  Impatience is not the best trait to have.  :)  I am just thrilled to be involved.
  • I bought a copy of Trail of Cthulhu on Ebay over the weekend.  Call of Cthulhu is one of my favorite games I have ever played and I am excited to read and play this game.
  • We made 5 pre-gen characters for our Spirit of the Century game saturday.  It was fun.  It was the first time I have actually made characters for the game (I am theone running it) and I had a blast.
  • I plan on using those pre-gen characters to break in a few of my friends that want to play the DFRPG.  Just so they can get their feet wet on the Fate sytem.  I did explain the system to my girlfriend Natalie last night.
  • I keep reading about how great D&D 4 is.  I guess I am still too irritated with older versions to really give it much of a thought.  Someday maybe.
  • I hope to get to play Don't Rest Your Head soon.  Either be me running it, or my friend Henry.

A shift in philosophy

It is amazing to me how things change in your life. How you can be so used to how things are and then something comes and changes how you view things.

Like gaming.

For almost two decades I have played the same type of games. The old school games. Games such as:Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk, D&D, Vampire, and games mostly by the biggest game companies out there. Very structured games that have evolved over the years and still have a legion of fans.

I have to start this by saying this was a group pick by our book club.  Once everyone has chosen a book, we choose a group pick which is usually some type of classic.

The four stories chosen were from Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre:
Call of Cthulhu
The Colour of Outer Space
The Dunwich Horror
That Shadow out of Time

Thoughts on creating a game...

I spend a lot of time thinking about how we should go about making our game. I mean I know my motivation for this is because of how much D&D annoys me at this point. Don’t get me wrong it can still be a lot of fun (Henry’s crazy Ragnarock campaign was a blast), but overall I am looking for a different experience. D&D has meant a lot to me in the thirteen or so years I have played it, so although I am a bit bored with it; it is where my role playing experience started.

What kind of game do we want to create? That is where I keep coming back to in my thoughts on game creation. We already know it will take place in a fantasy setting. That is the setting I am more familiar with and I know Henry is a fantasy geek from way back as well.

I figured this was going to be a long journey, so I had to ask myself some questions.
