Book 24. The Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

From time to time I like to sink my teeth into a good horror novel.I cannot help it, I enjoy the adrenaline rush of being scared.Saying that, it is so hard to actually be frightened in this day and age.Between movies like Saw and Hostel, completely ruining the horror genre and so much bad horror being written, let’s just say it isn’t what it used to be.

So I have heard from some people that this was a good novel, so when I found it at the used bookstore for 2 dollars, it was an easy decision.I did not know at the time that this was written by Stephen King’s son.But upon looking at the cover in the back, it was completely obvious. He looks so much like his father it is a bit scary.

So the story is this.Judas Coyne (an aging rocker) is a collector of unusual things.A lot of them dealing with the occult. His assistant stumbles across an auction site that is willing to sell a ghost to the highest bidder.Winning the auction, a box is delivered to him.It contains a suit and as you may have guessed by now, a ghost. Now Judas is in a life or death fight against an angry spirit out for blood.
This novel was actually fairly scary.Mostly due to the reasons I mentioned before. If you do not believe in ghosts, this may have bored the hell out of you.Judas was interesting in the fact that he was the main protagonist, but he was a bit of a jerk.A selfish, aging rocker that for most of his life did not care about anyone but himself.

Yet underneath that there is some good to his character.
Still, there was a lot more going on in this novel than met the eye.The plot was frightening in its own right. Not because of the inclusion of spirits, but because of how crazy people can actually be sometimes and the lengths people can go to accomplish their ill-conceived goals.

Overall, it was a fun ride.It kept me on my toes and made me want to read more. That is what you want in a novel most of the time.

As you read earlier I do love a good horror novel. The only type of story that really seems to scare me anymore is ones dealing with ghosts (and sometimes other venues of the supernatural depending on how well they are written).Mostly due to my own experience with a few and m total belief in them. There is nothing more terrifying than dealing with a spirit that angry or uneasy.I get goose bumps just thinking about it.

As I mentioned if you do not believe in ghosts, this may have not been for you.The last time I was a bit creeped out by a book was in Bag of Bones (written by his father).Like father, like son, I suppose.
How do you fight someone that can force you to do things?Craddock invades Judas’s life and he is everywhere. In his car.On the television. On the radio. He even convinces Judas’s assistant into hanging himself. The only protection they had were the two dogs that Judas had, which could see Craddock and even attack him.

The good. The relationships were the most important part of this story. The ones between Judas and everyone else.Judas and Anna.Judas and Marybeth, and lastly Judas and Craddock.Everything in this novel revolved around how Judas interacted with the other characters.Although his need to nickname them after states was kind of odd.It all started with Florida (Anna), and her “suicide”.She had so many mental issues due to her childhood and what Craddock did to her.It was very disturbing to hear someone would hypnotize their daughter to make them forget that he molested her. That is messed up on so many levels; I get angry again just thinking about it.So by the time Anna came into Judas’s life, she had an issue or two.So when he sent her away because she was getting on his nerves for the most part, she went home and killed herself.Or so you thought early on.

Judas (who loves women into goth) then gets together with Georgia (Marybeth) and it looked like he was falling into the same routine. You could see that he cared for her, but in his own self loathing, he never allows himself to get too close to someone. So, he sends them away after a while, not really worrying about how much he hurt them. But with the box, came the ghost, and it changed everything.Marybeth refused to leave his side and forces Judas to deal with his feelings for her (and also for Anna).Together they tried to fight and eventually flee from Craddock.

Craddock.Man he was evil.He wanted Judas to kill himself and those around him.It wasn’t enough that he died, but he wanted him to kill Marybeth as well.A chilling scene was when Judas actually could not ignore Craddock’s thoughts and grabbed Marybeth by the hair and threw her to the ground.I wondered if he would kill her.Craddock did not just want Judas to hurt, he wanted him to suffer. It was very disturbin.

The plot turned out to be pretty interesting.Anna had went home after Judas kicker her out.She confronts her sister and Craddock saying she knows what they did and would go back to Judas and then the police. So, they killed her and made it look like a suicide. Then after Craddock died, they set up the auction knowing Judas would be interested. It was a crazy move of self-preservation.Jessica (Anna’s sister) was crazy as hell. She helped Craddock murder her own sister, and even let Craddock have his way with her own daughter. There were some disturbing things in this book.

It wasn't really scary as much as creepy, but it was very well written in that regard. I kept having goosebumps when there were scenes with Craddock and that is what I wanted out of the novel.

The ugly.Anytime you deal with things like molestation it is ugly.It can bring up a lot of anger (with good reason) and has to be done in a way that doesn’t bring that anger out when someone is reading it.It is a horrible thing and one that should never be taken lightly. My rating system

My rating. Amazingly good read. 8.0 out of 10 A fun ride through the eyes of a hero that you may actually dislike.  The novel was a bit scary at times and really delivered in a lot of ways.
