Deep Storm by Lincoln Child Fiction
419 pages

I am a big fan of Lincoln Child. Mostly due to the Pendergast novels that he and Douglas Preston write together. In the last few years both authors have released novels written by themselves. The novels are not as good, but the ones by Child I have enjoyed.

Deep Storm starts off with Peter Crane being brought to a secret underwater platform to diagnose a rash of illnesses spreading through the crew. From here things only get crazier as he tries to determine the link between both the physical and the psychological problems that many of the crew suffer from.

Peter is a pretty good, if not original character. He fits a stereotypical type that does take a little away from my enjoyment of him. But it is hard to come up with new and interesting characters all the time, so I can cut him just a small amount of slack. Some of the other characters were even more stereotypical than he was. Spartan the iron tough man in charge of the platform. Unyielding and cold. Eerily uncaring. Korolis the drone that does nothing but follow orders to a frightening degree. Michele Bishop was a bit cold to Crane at first. She did not like that he was invading her turf (she was a doctor on the platorm trying to figure out the illnesses). More on her later. Hui Ping was a tough little woman that helped Crane figure out most of the mystery.

The story was ok, but nothing really amazing. I do like his plots normally, but I was losing interest in this from the beginning. It was still an easay read, but never truly engaged me. That was due to the fact that the "alien" aspect of the story never really did anything for me. The tension never rose to the point where I could really enjoy the story. The betrayal of MIchele Bishop was nice, but it was not hard to figure out that she was the sabotour. The death of Korolis was nice, cuz it is always nice to see the prick die. :)

My rating system

My rating.  Liked it, but that was about it.  The book was ok.  There was decent characterization and the idea was ok.  But it never really pushed the envelope and let it go somewhere a bit more interesting.  I guess I have very high expectations of this author and that  always makes me really look forward to reading his next book
