Nightlife by Rob Thurman fantasy
352 pages

Since I am a huge fan of the Dresden Files, I was intrigued by this book more than a little. I kept putting off buying it because of the feedback I had gotten from those I know that have read it (both online and in life). Especially one person in general who kept telling me it was awful. But I wanted to ro read it for myself. I mean how bad could it be?

I should have listened to them.
Now I did not hate this book, but it was pretty awful in a lot of ways. So let me get that out of the way and then I will talk about what I liked about it.
Things wrong with it:
-Too much cursing. I know people want books to hvae grit, but sometimes it seemed like he was doing it just for the sake of it.
-I did not care about Cal at all. He is the protagonist and I wanted him to just go away. Rude, brash, and all those things that "tough guys" are stereotypically supposed to be. There was nothing there to grab me. Nothing there to make me care about what he went through.
-His brother Niko was almost as bad. The polar opposite of Cal, with his book knowledge and having to eat healthy. It was such a polar opposite that it was kind of laughable.
-Although this book takes place in NYC, it never felt like it did. I am from NYC and I got the feeling this book could have taken place anywhere else and no one would have known the difference. If a book is supposed to take place in a certain city, it should have the feel of that city.
-The book was too "uber" masculine. There was no female characters with any type of depth at all (and rarely even any at all). I am a guy but I want more out of a book then a bunch of guys running around acting this way.
-Meredith (the girl working at the bar), are you kidding me? Fake boobs, hot as hell? Ugh. I wanted to slap myself every time she came into a scene.
-The plot was not even interesting due to the fact that you did not care about Cal.
What I did like about the book.
-I love all things supernatural and there was a bit of that here.
-Robin Goodfellow had a lot of layers and was actually funny some of the time.
My Rating System
My Rating. Awful. Give this one away. Overall, the plot was not exactly stimulating and the book itself never really grabbed me. I wanted to like the book, but if you want to read a better book dealing with the supernatural, check out my review of The Devil You Know by Mike Carey
The characters were not well developed and most of the time just very annoying.
